“My Phone!” 13-Year-Old Killed By Subway Train While Trying To Retrieve Cellphone
A teenage girl has been fatally struck by a New York subway train while trying to retrieve her cellphone from the tracks. According to the New York Post, 13-year-old Dina Kadribasic died Sunday afternoon after being hit by a southbound R train in Queens.
The NYPD said the teenager had been trying to get back onto the platform from the track bed — where she had just collected her phone — when the train struck her around 2 p.m.
After the collision, onlookers reportedly tried to save her from being pinned by the locomotive. “People were trying to push the train, and everybody on the train moved to the side so we could push the weight of the train to the side,” straphanger Stephan Topete told ABC7.
“We thought the person was actually trapped in between the train,” he said. Video posted on Twitter showed a large crowd of commuters — many still in shock from what they witnessed — waiting outside the station as fire trucks and ambulances arrived at the scene.
“A lot of them were crying on the platform,” Topete said. “I think two of them were even throwing up.” Paramedics transported Kadribasic to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Subway traffic was delayed as a result of the incident.
