H&M has added a new model to their fashion campaign. Mariah Idrissi, a 23-year-old Muslim woman is now gracing the store’s ads while wearing a hijab.
Idrissi, who is of Pakistani and Moroccan heritage and based in London, is the world’s second largest global retailer’s first model to have ever appeared in their campaign wearing a hijab.
According to Mariah, she began wearing a hijab at the age of 17. ‘It always feels like women who wear hijab are ignored when it comes to fashion… so it’s amazing that a brand that is big has recognised the way we wear hijab,’ she said during an interview.
Mariah was invited to star in the ad by way of a model scout, and she admits that at first she was a little skeptical.
However, she consulted with her parents and decided to give it a go because she believed it was for a ‘good cause’.
During the photo shoot Mariah was provided a special team of makeup artists and stylists which most of which were women and the few men that were there were ordered not to touch her.
‘H&M asked how much in terms of neck I could show, but to be honest they were very respectful,’ she said.
